Tyres

Which tyres work best at Herts Nitro Model Club?

-- A helpful guide --

8th

For 1/8th off-road racing at HNMC, choosing the right tyre can make a huge difference to both lap times and confidence on track. HNMC’s surface changes throughout the day depending on temperature, moisture, and how much dust has been pulled to the surface, so having the correct tread pattern and compound is essential. The tyres below are recommendations that have consistently worked well at the club, whether you are just getting started, racing competitively, or adapting to changing track conditions.

Good for beginners and intermediate drivers

Jetko J Zero Composite Ultra soft (for 2°c to 15°c) - View tyre

Jetko J Zero Composite Super soft (for 12°c to 25°c) - View tyre - View mounted tyre

10th

At the HNMC 1/10th track you will find most racers are using Schumacher Tyres. All tyres listed below are Schumacher tyres.
It is not to say that there aren’t other manufacturers that offer suitable tyres for our track; but Schumacher, being a British company, mean that their tyres are highly available and well priced. The BRCA nationals and regionals all utilise this brand for their nominated tyre – so most racers competing in these will use them all the time to maximise their knowledge of them.

2wd tyres

Rear
Mezzo – View tyre - View mounted tyre - Standard rear tyre of nationals and regionals offering good longevity.
Cactus – View tyre - View mounted tyre - Perhaps the fastest tyre round the track until the sand comes up.
Azami – View tyre - View mounted tyre - Designed as a carpet tyre; it is spotted at the track and works well. Often used by racers who have bought them for carpet racing and have spare ones available to use; rather than having bought them specifically.

Front
Splinter - View tyre - View mounted tyre
Fusion slim - View tyre
Cut stagger - View tyre
Stagger rib - View tyre
Stagger rib and splinter tyres are the best option for beginners. Offering good grip but with the safest and easiest driving experience.

4wd tyres

Great option:
Rear – Cactus - View tyre - View mounted tyre
Front – Cactus Fusion - View tyre - View mounted tyre

More advanced setup:
Rear – Mezzo - View tyre - View mounted tyre
Front – Mezzo - View tyre - With one or two rows of spikes removed on inner and outer edges of tyre with optionally glued sidewalls.

Tyre inserts

Sponge inserts in the tyres help to support the tyre shape and how the tyre functions on the track. Options to the softness of the foam and whether it is closed-cell or open-cell are available to suit all requirements. A schumacher medium insert is a good place to start for 2wd rear - view insert - and 4wd front - view insert - and 4wd rear - view insert. Front inserts for 2wd are not commonly used at HNMC. However a layer of glue is sometimes used to coat the outer sidewall of the front tyre to hold up its shape - view glue.

Tyre compounds

Silver compound is the softest. Yellow compound is medium. Blue compound is a harder compound.
Yellow compound for dry weather. Silver compound for wet/damp weather. Blue compound on the front will create a less aggressively steering car. Blue compound all round will reduce ultimate pace but will increase longevity and time between tyres changes.
